With developments and changes occurring with GAEC (Good Agricultural & Environmental Conditions) and the implementation of the Nitrates Directive, grain, oilseed and protein seed producers have now spent months having to deal with measures quite divorced from any real conditions of climate, agronomy, the economy and ecology. Their patience has been tested to its limits, not only with this but also with the issue of access to inputs needed for them to be a competitive force on the market.
It is now time for the public authorities to adopt a balanced approach when implementing “Grenelle environment” decisions affecting agriculture.
Does the government still have faith in the professional responsibility of grain, oilseed and protein seed producers? Has it understood the economic situation that producers have to contend with? Or has it now changed its approach to the arable crop sector, opting for an ideological view based on theory and dogma?
The arbitrage and trade-offs soon to occur at the Prime Minister’s office setting percentage rates applying to acreage and approving products for seed treatment will be of symbolic importance for farmers.
