Demonstrations by Farmers – a warning to public authorities

10/16/2009

There were demonstrations across France:  Toulouse, Mont-de-Marsan, Poitiers, Orléans, Rouen, Lille, Metz, Colmar, Dijon, Bourg-en- Bresse, Valence, Chalons-en-Champagne, Amiens, Beauvais, Compiègne, Melun, Fontainebleau and more.  There was the high-profile action in Paris outside Fouquet’s restaurant on the Champs-Elysées, plus field crop farmers out in large numbers, demonstrating in regional capitals and other cities around France.

These were farmers determined to show just how dramatic the situation has become for them, producing unprecedented effects.  Even though harvests have reached good levels, with the exception of some regions in the south of the country, farmers will see their income drop drastically in 2009.  Further effects have come from the European Union with the CAP Health Check, and France where, for many farmers, national decisions are likely to spell the end of their livelihood by 2010.

The public authorities have now been warned.  The determination of field crop farmers is as great as their distress.  They are ready to take further action and as many times as is needed, maintaining or even increasing their protests if substantial changes are not made to rectify the policy on their sector.
